Join a Free Company! In my opinion, this is the most important thing. You get access to Free Company buffs and people who will help answer your questions. Plus, it's more fun to play with friends!
Get a challenge log. The quest starts in Limsa Lominsa (Level 15 quest Rising to the Challenge. Players can start the quest by talking to I'tolwann in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (x11,y10)). I'm still a little bitter about this one. I didn't get mine until I'd been playing for several months. I missed out on so much easy experience and gil!
Google, YouTube, read guides, or ask about what you don't know. There's no need to struggle through alone! Just remember that guides eventually become outdated, but they will still give you a basic idea of what to expect when trying something new.
Start on a DPS job if you're new to MMO games, and maybe even if you're not. It can be a lot of pressure to level a tank or healer job first. People can be especially critical of new tanks. Don't take it personally, but do let people know you're new when you enter a dungeon. Yeah, some people may still be jerks, but most will be patient and they might even offer explain things for you.
Eat food before battle. No one should battle on an empty stomach! Plus, it's +3% bonus experience and every little bit helps. We have a maid that sells cheap food downstairs in the Free Company house. Stock up on food appropriate to your job!
Visit the Free Company house. It should be the first option on your teleport menu after you join the Free Company. Once you get a battle chocobo at level 30, you can stable him outside and we'll help feed him for you.
Roll on all gear in dungeons. Yes, ALL gear. Even the gear you know you will never use. The loot system is pretty fair in this game, so people will not hassle you for rolling. Save this gear and use it for Grand Company delivery missions, once you unlock them. Turning in gear through your GC will earn you GC seals, and is by FAR the easiest way to earn them. You can then use GC seals to buy an assortment of items, many of which cannot be purchased using gil or other currency.
Complete main storyline quests. This will take a while, but completing the main storyline will help you level more quickly and it unlocks almost everything in the game. Don't try to skip it!
Switch character settings over to legacy view. You won't need this immediately, but it's good to get used to it from the start. In game, go to the system menu/character configuration/general/movement settings and switch it to legacy type (I also have the two extra boxes checked there). This makes it so your character can walk backwards quickly, which is essential once you get to fights like titan where it is important to dodge stuff fast!
Don't get overwhelmed. This is a big game and growing with every patch. It can be overwhelming at first, but it doesn't take too long to pick up the basics and soon you will be helping others!
